What is Canine Parathyroid Cancer?

The parathyroid glands are responsible for controlling the calcium in the body. There are four parathyroid glands, two on each lobe of the thyroid gland. They are located at the base of the neck.

Parathyroid cancer is an extremely rare type of cancer; it is also a very slow growing cancer. It is also extremely hard to diagnose. Surgery may help extend life even when the cancer spreads. The 5-year survival rate is 50 - 80%.

The reason why a pet may develop this, or any cancer, is not straightforward. Cancer is often the culmination of a series of circumstances that come together for the unfortunate pooch. In fact, malignant thyroid tumors are moderately common in dogs. Boxers, beagles and golden retrievers are said to have more thyroid tumors than other breeds.
